Spec Watch: September 28, 2026 — 16 Priority Books, 53 Buzz Flags

This is a report of what checks out on every book hitting FOC before Monday's cutoff, not a list of picks. The goal is to give you the data so you can decide what to do with it.

Three confirmed potential firsts anchor the front of this week's list: Absolute Cheetah debuts in Absolute Wonder Woman #25, Julie Lorello debuts in Ordained #4, and Malalkin the Minion shows up in Eye Collector #5. All three carry Hot Spec flags and all three are Confirmed off the solicits. Add the confirmed Feral King debut in Thundercats #1 and a new Alien Queen in Alien vs. X-Men #2, and the first-appearance side of this week is where the signal lives.

16 priority books this week, 43 confirmed. FOC closes Monday, so the window on ordering these is short. Below are the firsts, then the books on the radar, then the rumors still unconfirmed. Read the data and make your own call.

Ordained #4 (Bad Idea, $5.99, Robert Venditti/Trevor Hairsine): confirmed potential first of Julie Lorello, an ex-Army Ranger who turns up on Father Roy's doorstep after a court martial. This is a surprise continuation of the series, and Bad Idea's whole model is built on scarcity, so the debut of a new character to the Ordained mythos is the exact kind of thing their audience chases. Venditti and Hairsine back on the book together is the pairing that made the original run move.

Absolute Wonder Woman #25 (DC Comics, $6.99, Kelly Thompson/Hayden Sherman): confirmed potential first of Absolute Cheetah, the reimagined Barbara Minerva, in an oversized milestone. The solicit says she's "not quite what anyone expected," which is the interesting part. The Absolute line has been the reliable spec engine of DC's slate, and a reworked marquee villain debuting inside it is the read here.

Eye Collector #5 (Image Comics, $3.99, Jonathan Ball, GMB Chomichuk/GMB Chomichuk): the solicit puts the potential first of Malalkin the Minion right in the cover copy. Small-print Image horror with a confirmed first appearance is the kind of book that gets away from people before FOC even closes.

Thundercats (2026) #1 (Dynamite Entertainment, $4.99, Greg Pak/David Cousens): confirmed potential first of the Feral King, Lion-O's new form triggered by a mysterious omen. Pak writing a relaunch with the ThunderCats sharing their Earth with the SilverHawks and the Mu'Tants gives this a real story engine beyond nostalgia. The incentive slate runs deep, from a 1:10 Seth Damoose virgin up to a 1:25 David Cousens virgin. The character debut lives in the issue, so the Regular is the entry point regardless of which cover you chase.

Alien Vs. X-Men #2 (Marvel Comics, $5.99, Kieron Gillen): solicited potential first of a new Alien Queen, plus Cable arriving from the future with a handpicked team. Gillen writing the Xenomorphs against the X-Men is the hook, and the Claremont flashback thread with Kitty Pryde running underneath adds a second reason to track it. There's a 1:25 by Nimit Malavia on this one for anyone chasing the ratio.

Lobo #8 (DC Comics, $4.99, Skottie Young/Jorge Corona): the DC solicit confirms the death of Lobo at the hands of Francis Dalex in part two of "Last Death of Lobo." Confirmed death beats always draw eyes, and Skottie Young writing the Main Man gives this the kind of run people are already reading. This is the event, not a tie-in.

Absolute Flash #20 (DC Comics, $5.99, Jeff Lemire/Haining): confirmed potential first of Ray Palmer as the Absolute Atom, with Absolute Cyborg introduced in the same issue. Lemire building out the Absolute corner of the DCU is doing exactly what the line was built for, dropping reworked legacy heroes as debuts. Two new Absolute versions in one book is worth a look.

Absolute Green Arrow #6 (DC Comics, $4.99, Pornsak Pichetshote/Rafael Albuquerque): confirmed identity reveal of the Green Arrow Killer, and the series is getting extended six more issues off the back of it. Grundy and Hector Hammond in the mix, and a finale one of them doesn't walk away from. The reveal plus the extension announcement in the same issue is the angle.

Scorched #56 (Image Comics, $3.99, Thomas Healy/Raymond Gay): the solicit bills this as the first appearance of the Prince of Cats. Spawn-universe firsts are a known lane, and the copy sets him up as the figure who's been watching from the shadows before he burns it all down. One catch: Spawn 77 #2 (on shelves 10/14, a week before this book's 10/21) is also tied to the Prince of Cats' first appearance, so which issue truly debuts him is not settled yet.

Space Ghost Vs The Herculoids #2 (Dynamite Entertainment, $4.99, David Pepose/Jonathan Lau): the confirmed 1:15 full-art incentive by Bjorn Barends is the variant to note here, sitting alongside virgins from Linsner (1:20) and Tom Raney (1:10). Pepose and Lau back together on the Hanna-Barbera crossover is the draw for the story side. The ratio is where the chase is.

Detective Comics #1114 (rumor-based) (DC Comics, $5.99, Tom Taylor/Jeff Spokes): the chatter here is a reported Bjorn Barends "Clayface movie variant" cover tied to film speculation. The interior is Batman and Mr. Freeze forced into an alliance to save Gotham at dawn. Nothing on the variant is confirmed yet, so treat the movie-cover angle as pure speculation and weigh it accordingly.

Godzilla Conquers The Multiverse #4 (rumor-based) (Marvel Comics, $4.99, Gerry Duggan): the spec is riding on Mecha Fin Fang Foom getting named in the solicit, but it's unconfirmed whether this is the character's first appearance. Duggan writing the Avengers of Doom against Godzilla is the reason to read it either way. If the first-appearance angle firms up, it changes the math, but right now it's a solicit mention and nothing more.

Ben 10 #6 (rumor-based) (Dynamite Entertainment, $4.99, Joe Casey/Robert Carey): the speculation is a new take on the classic villain Hex, based on the solicit promising Ben face-to-face with an all-new version of a classic foe. Joe Casey back on scripting a Ben 10 book is the actual signal, and Casey knows how to build these. The Hex angle is unconfirmed, so it's a watch, not a lock.

None of these mean "buy this." They say what the research found on the book before the cutoff.

• Confirmed: the publisher's own solicit, preview pages, or an official announcement backs the claim for this exact book and issue. Anything less is Likely (several rumor-class sources agree), Unverified (nothing proves it either way), or marked rumor-based in the text.
• Potential First: a source or the solicit says a character or version debuts here. It stays "potential" until the book is in hand. Reprints and facsimiles are never counted as firsts.
• Buzz Flag: more than one source is talking about the book. It measures chatter, not truth.
• Priority Books: our two top tiers. Hot Spec is a potential first that is confirmed. High Priority is a potential first that only rumor or chatter backs so far, or a confirmed key event (a death, a milestone, a crossover) without a first.
• Watch: chatter from more than one source, a confirmed event by itself, a 1:50 or higher ratio, or a #1 carrying an unverified claim.
• With Intel: the book has a written spec summary, of any status.
• Ratio Variant: a cover a shop gets only by ordering a set number of the regular cover. 1:25 means one per twenty-five.
