Spec Watch: September 14, 2026 — 22 Priority, 82 Buzz Flags

Two books carry the top spec flag into FOC closing Monday, and they sit on opposite ends of the same idea: reprints of two debut issues with real key-issue history behind them. Adventures Of Superman #501 is a facsimile of the confirmed first appearance of Superboy, and Luther Strode Anniversary #1 is a treasury reprint of the first Luther Strode. Neither is new content, both are worth understanding before you order.

Beyond those two, the week leans heavy on SDCC exclusives out of Titan and a wall of collected editions that don't factor into single-issue calls. The signal for FOC is in the confirmed key events: a couple of returns, a reveal or two, and one Bleeding Cool sourced first-appearance rumor worth flagging as exactly that.

Adventures Of Superman #501 (DC Comics, $3.99, Karl Kesel/Tom Grummett). The Superboy debut is the whole story here. This is a confirmed facsimile of the issue where the leather-jacket Superboy first shows up, Kesel and Grummett on the original book. The facsimile matters as a framing point: it's a reprint of the key, not the 1993 first print, so know which one is going in the box before you order. The original still carries the first appearance for the aftermarket. This one puts the art back in circulation at cover.

Luther Strode Anniversary #1 (Image Comics, $14.99, Justin Jordan/Tradd Moore). A confirmed 15th-anniversary treasury reprint of the original Luther Strode #1 from 2011, oversized on newsprint with an art gallery. Same caveat as the Superman: this is a reprint of the debut, not the debut. Tradd Moore's early work is the draw, and The Strange Talent of Luther Strode #1 has a following. The treasury format and Moore's art on the same character is the reason to look, reader's call on whether the reprint fits your box versus chasing the 2011 issue.

Meals To Astonish: Avengers #1 (Marvel Comics, $5.99, Steve Orlando). The confirmed first Marvel appearance of chef José Andrés, who joins the Avengers in this one. Per the solicit, Tony Stark and José head to Las Vegas to debut their disaster-relief tech and Ultron crashes the launch; the same issue debuts Venomnom. A real-person first in a Marvel book is an unusual spec class, and the World Central Kitchen angle gives it reach outside the usual buyers. It is the week's only confirmed new first on a single issue, so it earns a spot here on that alone.

Absolute Superman #24 (DC Comics, $5.99, Jason Aaron/Juan Ferreyra). Confirmed first appearance of a new suit of armor for Absolute Steel, per the solicit. Aaron and Ferreyra have been building this Absolute run, and a new-costume debut inside it is a clean spec hook. Costume firsts are lower-tier than character firsts, so weigh it as such, but the confirmed status takes the guesswork out.

Avengelyne #1 (Image Comics, $3.99, Rob Liefeld/Daniel Maine). Confirmed news of a film in pre-production at Warner Bros. with Margot Robbie's Lucky Chap is the angle. A film-in-development anchor on a #1 launch is a real pull, and this is a fresh start for the character. The screenplay credit and studio attachment are the reason to review the order here.

GI Joe A Real American Hero Tomb Raider #1 (Image Comics, $4.99, Kyle Higgins/Elena Casagrande). Confirmed first-ever crossover between G.I. Joe and Tomb Raider, Lara Croft dropped into Cobra Island with Shipwreck and a squad of Joes. The 1:100 foil sits in this week's steepest tier, one of three books on the week's list at that ratio, so if you chase incentives that's the cover to note. Higgins and Casagrande on a first-time franchise meetup is the story.

Thundercats (2026) #1 (Dynamite Entertainment, $4.99, Greg Pak/David Cousens). Solicitations confirm the first appearance of Lion-O's new form, the Feral King, a beast unleashed by an omen from the sky. Greg Pak on a relaunch #1 with a confirmed character-form debut is the read. The Feral King first is the spec, not the Metal cover, so look to the standard for the event.

Crowbound #2 (Image Comics, $3.99, Jeff Lemire/Dustin Nguyen). The Lemire and Nguyen dark-fantasy follow-up continues, with Rose killed off and something in the swamp waiting. Same team behind a lot of well-regarded creator-owned work, and a #2 is where you find out if the launch held. The 1:25 Matias Bergara virgin is the incentive to watch on this one.

The Curse Of Sherlee Johnson #8 (rumor-based) (Image Comics, $3.99, Daniel Henriques/Jonathan Glapion). Bleeding Cool sourced chatter says this issue contains a potential first of a character called Prince of Cats, reportedly tied to future Spawn solicitations. That connection is unconfirmed, so treat it as pure story intel until a solicit backs it. If the Spawn link is real it changes the math, but there's no confirmed anchor yet. Reader's call on how much weight the rumor gets.

Black Cat #15 (rumor-based) (Marvel Comics, $4.99, G. Willow Wilson). Reports that Felicia Hardy gets revealed as a mutant are driving the interest, no confirmation attached. The book itself is a Spidey team-up heist story per the solicit; the mutant angle is separate speculation. If that reveal happens it's a character-status change worth having; if it doesn't, this is a mid-run team-up. Flagging it as the rumor it is.
