Marvel launches its Midnight Universe horror imprint this week, and two of the three debuts carry confirmed first-appearance signals: Midnight Fantastic Four #1 and Jonathan Hickman's Midnight X-Men #1. Alongside those, six books carry confirmed potential firsts across the docket, from a new Elseworlds Luthor in Superman: Father Of Tomorrow #5 to Kelly Thompson's Angel #1 introducing Leviathan as the new Buffy/Angel antagonist. FOC closes Monday, so anything you want to move on these needs a decision before then.
Dynamite is carrying the most incentive covers on the week with 33, and the steepest ratio on the docket is a shared tier: three books sit at 1:250, including Angel #1 and Bad Idea's Lancer #1. That Texas Blood also runs a two-pronged play, with both a facsimile reprint of the debut and a fresh #1 arc premiere on the list.

Midnight X-Men #1 (Marvel Comics, $5.99). Hickman back on the X-Men is the read here, and this is his entry point into the new Midnight Universe horror imprint. The setup: vampires and mutant empyres stalking New York, a fragile peace, an outright war brewing. Confirmed first-appearance signal on the debut. The 1:100 is an Ito virgin. Hickman on an X-launch with a horror reframe is the kind of pairing that decides how the whole imprint gets received.
Midnight Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel Comics, $5.99, Benjamin Percy). The other confirmed Midnight Universe debut. Percy takes the obsessive-scientist origin and warps four people into something horrifying in a new dimension. Confirmed first-appearance flag on the imprint launch. It runs a 1:25 Jeehyung Lee gallery edition alongside virgin ratios at 1:50 and 1:100. Two horror #1s dropping the same week from the same imprint is the angle for anyone tracking the line.
Angel #1 (Dynamite Entertainment, $11.99, Kelly Thompson/Giulia Giacomino). Confirmed potential first appearance of Leviathan, the new big bad for both the Angel and Buffy books, following July's Buffy #1. This is one of the shared-tier holders of the week's steepest ratio, with a 1:250 David Nakayama metal variant at the top of a long incentive lineup. Thompson launching the new antagonist across two connected series is what gives this one legs beyond the debut number.
Superman: Father Of Tomorrow #5 (DC Comics, $5.99, Kenny Porter/Danny Earls). Confirmed potential first appearance of Hex Luthor, a magical Elseworlds take on Lex. This is the Jor-El-centered Elseworlds where the setup follows him retreating to the Kent farm after a battle with Sam Lane and his WildC.A.T.s. New villain debuts in Elseworlds books are a coin flip on whether they carry, but a confirmed first on a Luthor variant is a clean spec anchor.
Ordained #4 (Bad Idea, $5.99, Robert Venditti/Trevor Harisine). Confirmed potential first appearance of Julie Lorello, an ex-Army Ranger dropped into Father Roy's world after Cormac Byrne's death leaves a power void in Saint Louis. This is a surprise continuation of the series, which is itself a Bad Idea signal. The 1:50 is a Jorge Fornes virgin. Bad Idea firsts run on scarcity, so the incentive covers are where the interest concentrates.
That Texas Blood Facsimile Edition #1 (Image Comics, $3.99, Chris Condon/Jacob Phillips). This is a confirmed facsimile reprint of the debut issue, printed on deluxe newsprint. The original hook still holds up: a search for a casserole dish turns into a dark confrontation on Sheriff Joe Bob Coates' 70th birthday. Note this is the facsimile, not the new arc. It lands the same week as the brand-new Hell Comes To Allison Ranch #1, so shops carrying the series have both the reprint and the fresh #1 on the list this week.
ON THE RADAR
Absolute Batman #24 (DC Comics, $5.99, Scott Snyder/Nick Dragotta). Confirmed first appearance of Barbara Gordon taking up the Absolute Bat mantle. Snyder and Dragotta have been building the Absolute line hard, and a mantle-swap on a titled Absolute book is a real event beat, not a cameo. The 1:25 is a Filipe Andrade cover. Watch-tier here, but the Snyder/Dragotta pairing plus a confirmed identity beat is worth reviewing your order on.
Department Of Truth #39 (Image Comics, $4.99, James Tynion IV/Martin Simmonds). New confirmed story arc kicks off a three-way conflict between Lee's DoT, Cole Turner's White Hat faction, and Martin Barker's Black Hat faction. Ben Templesmith returns for backups filling in Barker's hidden history. Tynion arc-starts on this book have historically been strong jumping-on points, and the 1:25 Ito is the chase.
Seasons #13 (Image Comics, $4.99, Rick Remender/Paul Azaceta). Confirmed extra-length series finale. Spring has to give up control and trust her four sisters to break the fifth-season prophecy. Remender and Azaceta finales tend to be the issues people go back for once a run wraps, and this is the extra-sized close to the whole thing.
The format is the whole angle on Doom All-On-One #1 (Marvel Comics). Al Ewing and Alessandro Cappuccio deliver a confirmed 50-page landscape one-shot, every page a wide-screen splash, as Doom battles the entire Marvel Universe across the flames of perdition for his mother's soul. Fifty splash pages is not a normal book. The 1:50 is a Ben Harvey virgin.
Two-property crossover on Vampirella X Witchblade Special #1 (Dynamite Entertainment, $5.99, Erica Schultz/Valentina Pinti). Confirmed Vampirella and Witchblade meetup: Sara Pezzini catches an ancient-curse case in New York, gets infected, and Vampirella has to step in. First time these two share a book. The incentive lineup runs deep, with a 1:25 Lucio Parrillo virgin at the top.
RUMOR WATCH
Midnight Spider-Man #1 (rumor-based) (Marvel Comics, $5.99). The 1:50 Peach Momoko virgin is rumored to carry the first appearance of Midnight Black Cat. The imprint launch itself is confirmed, but the Black Cat first is unverified chatter tied to that specific incentive cover. If it holds, the 1:50 is where the value sits. Reader's call on whether to chase it before confirmation.
Venom #262 (rumor-based) (Marvel Comics, $4.99, Al Ewing). Online speculation pegs this as the finale of the MJ-as-Venom era and the return of Eddie Brock, with Venomworld live and the Knull/Hela war just ended. The story beats aren't solicit-locked, so treat the Eddie return as unverified. The 1:25 is an Ario Anindito cover.
Gambit: Wanted #3 (rumor-based) (Marvel Comics, $4.99, Chris Claremont). Speculation is on a potential first appearance of Suzerain, Gambit's new queen, but her status as a genuinely new character is unconfirmed. Set just before Gambit joined the X-Men. Claremont writing a possible new first is worth a look, but the "new character" part is the piece that hasn't been nailed down. The 1:25 is a Rickie Yagawa cover.
