Spec Watch: July 20, 2026 — 13 Priority Books, 43 Rumors

Adventure Comics #247 anchors the week: DC is running a facsimile of the Legion of Super-Heroes debut, and it is one of four books carrying the top spec tier. The other three are Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #2, The Trillion Dollar Kid #2, and Sakamoto Holidays #2. Add the potential firsts on Absolute Batman #23 and Grendel, and the reveal is where the signal sits this week.

FOC closes Monday, so anything on the Priority list is on the clock. Ratio depth is worth a mention too: nine books sit at 1:50 as the week's steepest tier, shared across titles including Catacomb of Torment #14 and Exquisite Corpses Rascal Randy #2, and Dynamite carries the most incentive covers of any publisher on the docket.

Adventure Comics #247 (DC Comics, $4.99). This is the confirmed potential first of the Legion of Super-Heroes, done as a facsimile of the 1958 original. The Legion has a deep fanbase, and DC keeps the property in rotation, so the facsimile treatment puts the debut back in front of collectors who cannot touch the original. Note this is a facsimile reprint, not new content. Shops carrying facsimile lines may want to review the order on this one before Monday.

Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #2 (DC Comics, $3.99, Doyle/Galan). Basil Karlo chases the man who stole his identity onto a Hollywood film lot, and a new supplement is triggering grotesque transformations across Los Angeles. The angle here is timing: this issue releases ahead of the character's announced DCU film debut. Jude Ellison S. Doyle writing with Fran Galan on interiors, the body-horror direction is the read.

The Trillion Dollar Kid #2 (Image Comics, $3.99, Johns/Simeone). Johns and Tomasi close the "Who Are The Unbelievables?" arc here, with The Rocketfellers, Hornsby & Halo, and Tommy Townsend teaming up against Tommy's malfunctioning bodyguard Sterling Steele. The finale introduces a new character roster to set up the line-wide Ghost Machine crossover, so the potential firsts are the spec. The 1:20 is an Ivan Reis cover.

Absolute Batman #23 (DC Comics, $5.99, Snyder/Dragotta). The solicit confirms multiple character deaths in the "Batman vs Batman" showdown, plus the design reveal of Absolute Clayface's new look, orchestrated by Scarecrow. Note the character debuted around #21, so this is the look reveal, not the potential first. Snyder and Dragotta on the flagship Absolute title, and the death-count language is the hook. The 1:25 is a Damion Scott cover.

Grendel: Devil's Crucible--Sedition #2 (Dark Horse Comics, $4.99). The solicit confirms the potential first of Christine Spar's clone in a four-issue series. Matt Wagner's vampire-ruled future earth continues, and a new version of a legacy Grendel figure is the kind of beat the long-running Grendel readership tracks. Confirmed in the solicitation, so this is not a rumor call.

Legend Of La Rosa Blanca #1 (Prana Publishers, $19.99, Shand/Gambone). Confirmed potential first of the new title character in a western horror book. The availability is the story: the crowdfunded main cover run was under 500 copies, and this is its first wide direct-market release, with a Leirix Li "Racy" variant capped at 99. Pat Shand writing with Gerardo Gambone and Gordon Purcell on art. Low ordered by definition, so the order math matters here.

Valiant Beyond: Tales Of The Shadowman #8 (IDW Publishing). Confirmed return of Michael LeRoi as Shadowman, resurrected after being gone for over a century. Mama Nettie wants to bring LeRoi back via Punk Mambo, setting up a Shadowman vs. Shadowman showdown. LeRoi is the version most Valiant readers know, so the return of that specific character is the beat to watch.

Thundercats X Silverhawks #5 (Dynamite Entertainment, $4.99, Shalvey/Moss). Confirmed finale of the five-part crossover per the solicit. There are unverified reports of the potential firsts of a ThunderHawks team and a character named Chromium, but those debuts are not specifically confirmed for this issue, so treat the finale as the anchor and the firsts as upside. Multiple virgin incentive covers on this one.

Fireborn #4 (Image Comics, $4.99, Pires/Mulholland). The solicit confirms a major character death closing the first arc, with the final showdown between Fireborn and CU in New York. Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas writing, Patrick Mulholland on art with virgin variants at 1:25 and 1:50. Death beats in a debut arc are the kind of thing worth flagging early.

Witchblade #24 (Image Comics, $3.99, Bennett/Cafaro). Solicits confirm the reveal of the Chairwoman, the mysterious creator of the enhanced assassin, closing the current arc. Sara facing down Aphrodite IX with an identity reveal attached is the hook. Marguerite Bennett writing, Giuseppe Cafaro on interiors.

Ultimate Impact: Reborn #4 (Marvel Comics, $4.99, Condon). Confirmed potential firsts of Hostilicus and the Ultimate Negative Zone threat. Miles Morales and Iron Man recruit Captain America against Hostilicus, with a new Wonder Man and Sightseer in the mix. Chris Condon writing in the Ultimate line, where new-character debuts have carried weight. On my radar this week.

What If...? Runaways #1 (rumor-based) (Marvel Comics, $4.99, Rowell). The premise flips the origin: what if the Runaways never ran away, with Alex, Chase, Gert, Karolina, Molly, and Nico discovering the Pride but staying put. Rainbow Rowell writing. The spec driver is an unconfirmed report that this is part of a What If...? 50th Anniversary one-shot line for August 2026, so treat the anniversary framing as unconfirmed for now.

Living Corpse Hexx Files #1 (Prana Publishers, $4.99, Michelinie/Haeser). The Living Corpse teams with former paranormal investigator Mac Hexx against an ancient evil across two tales. David Michelinie writing with David Zuzelo, art from Ken Haeser, Buz Hasson, and Neil Vokes. The confirmed hook is the standard interior; a limited variant exists but a blank sketch cover cannot carry the story, so the read is the book itself. Reader's call on the order.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures #40 (IDW Publishing, debunked). Reports had this issue as the series finale. Our verification pass says otherwise: the series is confirmed to conclude with issue #41, and the #40 solicit is a standalone Mondo Gecko and Metalhead story with no finale language. If you were weighing this as a final-issue play, the actual finale is next issue. That is the kind of noise the verification pass exists to catch.

A few reprint and collected formats worth noting, none of them primary single-issue calls: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mirage Facsimile #1 (IDW Publishing, $12.99) is a foil facsimile of the 1984 Eastman/Laird original, and Hellraiser #1 (Boom! Studios, $4.99) is a facsimile reproduction framed as a relaunch with Clive Barker involvement. Both are reprints, not new content, so weigh them on that basis.
