1st appearance of Joe Fixit and 1st appearance of Marlo Chandler. Jeff Purves cover.
The Incredible Hulk #347 is the issue that changed what the Hulk could be. Written by Peter David with a cover by Jeff Purves, this September 1988 direct edition marks the first appearance of Joe Fixit, the gray-skinned, sharp-suited enforcer persona that Bruce Banner adopts while working the Las Vegas casino circuit. It is also the first appearance of Marlo Chandler, who becomes one of the most consequential supporting characters of the Peter David run. The story, titled 'Crapshoot,' drops readers into a version of the Hulk who wears a tuxedo, takes orders from a mob boss, and would rather outmaneuver you than smash you. The Absorbing Man figures into the closing pages as a tease of what is coming.
Peter David's tenure on this series is widely regarded as one of the best long-form runs in Marvel history, and #347 is the issue where that era properly begins. The gray Hulk had been reintroduced a year earlier, but this is the issue where the Joe Fixit identity is named, defined, and set loose. Collectors tracking first appearances of characters with major Hulk mythology relevance put this issue at the top of the list for that era. Jeff Purves's cover, with the gray Hulk rendered in the direct-market style of late-1980s Marvel, fits the street-level, noir-adjacent tone David was building.
