1st Venom solo title. Mark Bagley red foil direct edition cover.
Venom: Lethal Protector #1 is the launch issue of the 1993 Marvel limited series that gave Eddie Brock his first solo title. Written by David Michelinie with cover art by Mark Bagley, the issue establishes the premise that would define Venom's early solo run: a reluctant truce with Spider-Man and a move to San Francisco, where Brock is hunted by a mercenary force with deep ties to his past. The cover is the direct edition, dressed in the red foil treatment that made this issue immediately recognizable on the stands in early 1993.
The series itself runs six issues, February through July 1993, and this first issue is the milestone that opened the door for Venom as a headlining character rather than a Spider-Man villain or supporting player. Michelinie, who co-created Venom during his run on The Amazing Spider-Man, returned to the character here to build out his mythology. The first issue is the standard direct edition first printing, not the Gold Edition dealer incentive variant.
