The Shadow Vol. 4 #1 (of 2), Michael William Kaluta Cover, Dark Horse '94

Michael William Kaluta cover.

Dark Horse Comics published this two-issue adaptation of the 1994 Shadow film, bringing one of pulp fiction's most enduring characters back to comics as a movie tie-in. The Shadow, known in the comics as Lamont Cranston, had been a fixture of American popular culture since the 1930s radio serials and pulp magazines, and Dark Horse's adaptation put the character's cinematic revival directly on the page. The script is credited to Joel Goss and Michael William Kaluta, with Kaluta also supplying the cover art.

Kaluta's association with The Shadow is one of the more celebrated in comics history. His work on the early 1970s DC Shadow series defined a visual interpretation of the character that collectors and readers still reference, so his presence on this Dark Horse film adaptation carries real weight for anyone who follows his body of work. The cover for this issue reflects that same atmospheric, pulp-rooted sensibility he brought to the character decades earlier.

This is issue #1 of the two-part adaptation, published with a June 1994 cover date. The issue features The Shadow alongside Margo Lane and Shiwan Khan, the principal cast of the film. Published at a cover price of $2.50, it represents a snapshot of Dark Horse's licensed comics output during a period when the studio was actively adapting major film properties.
