1st full appearance of Ninja Spawn. Alex Ross virgin cover.
Spawn #301 marked a genuine milestone for Image Comics: the series surpassed the record for the longest-running creator-owned superhero comic in American publishing history. Todd McFarlane launched Spawn in 1992 and the book has run uninterrupted since, making #301 the issue that broke the record set by Dave Sim's Cerebus. The issue continues McFarlane's ongoing story with Al Simmons as Spawn and features interior art from Jerome Opeña, Clayton Crain, and Jason Shawn Alexander, three artists whose styles push the book's visceral horror aesthetic as hard as anything in the series' run.
Cover L is the Alex Ross Virgin Cover, meaning the cover art appears without trade dress, logo, or barcode; only the full painted image. Alex Ross painted several covers for the milestone issue, and the virgin presentation gives his work the cleanest possible showcase. Ross painted Spawn in his signature hyper-realistic style, with the weight and texture he brings to superhero subjects unlike almost any other cover artist working in comics today. The Violator also appears among the characters associated with this issue, grounding the milestone in the book's long history.
