1st full appearance of Ninja Spawn. Jerome Opeña variant cover.
Spawn #301 is the record-breaking issue that made the series the longest-running creator-owned comic book in history, surpassing Cerebus at 300 issues. Todd McFarlane returned to interior pencils and inks for the occasion, joined by Greg Capullo, Jason Shawn Alexander, Clayton Crain, and Jerome Opeña in what amounts to a summit of talent associated with the Spawn legacy. The milestone brought Al Simmons, Jim Downing, and the Violator together on the page, and the issue marks the first full appearance of Ninja Spawn.
This is Cover F, the Jerome Opeña variant. The capture note reads 'Multiple spawns on cover,' which describes the composition directly: Opeña's cover gathers several incarnations of the character into a single image, making it a natural fit for a milestone that celebrates the full arc of the franchise. Opeña is known for his precise linework and dense, layered detail, and his contribution here stands apart from the more painterly covers in the #301 set.
The issue carries a cover date of October 2019 and was published by Image Comics with a cover price of $4.99. Writer Todd McFarlane leads the credits alongside a roster of artists whose work spans the Spawn run, giving the issue a retrospective quality that fits its place in the series' history.
