First appearances of Cyan Fitzgerald and Terry Fitzgerald, and the first full appearance of Wanda Blake. Todd McFarlane cover.
Spawn #3 arrived in August 1992, just two months into Image Comics' launch, and with it Todd McFarlane introduced Cyan Fitzgerald, the young daughter of Wanda Blake, who would become one of the most emotionally significant figures in Spawn's ongoing mythology. The story, titled 'Questions,' plants the domestic world that gives Al Simmons' transformation its weight: Wanda's life rebuilt, a family McFarlane would return to again and again across hundreds of issues. This is the first appearance of Cyan Fitzgerald and Terry Fitzgerald, and the first full appearance of Wanda Blake. In Spawn #275 a force inside Cyan calls itself Misery, and in Spawn #282 her powers fully awaken as Black Mirror; she got her own series, Misery, in 2024.
McFarlane handled the full creative load on these early issues, writing, penciling, inking, and coloring alongside Reuben Rude and Steve Oliff, and the result is a book that captures the dense, shadow-heavy aesthetic that defined Spawn's visual identity from the start. The direct edition carries the standard cover, McFarlane's own composition, in the original $1.95 cover-price format that marked the Image founders' break from the major publishers.
This is the third issue of one of the most recognizable creator-owned comics of the modern era, from a line that launched with no precedent and built its entire world from scratch. Issue #3, story arc 'Questions,' carries the first appearances of Cyan and Terry Fitzgerald and the first full appearance of Wanda Blake.
