1st appearance of a Spawn/Violator hybrid. Francesco Mattina virgin cover.
Spawn #294 Cover B is a virgin variant featuring a Francesco Mattina cover, published by Image Comics in February 2019. Written by Todd McFarlane with interior art by Jason Shawn Alexander, this issue marks the first appearance of a Spawn/Violator hybrid, a significant moment in the long-running series that brought together two of its most defining characters in a new and unsettling form.
Mattina's virgin covers strip away all trade dress, presenting the artwork without logo, trade dress, or cover text. His painterly, high-contrast style made his Spawn covers among the most visually striking of the modern era, and the virgin presentation gives the image its full compositional impact. This is a Cover B designation, distinct from the standard Cover A release of the same issue.
Spawn has run continuously from its 1992 debut as one of Image Comics' foundational titles, with McFarlane both writing and shepherding the series through its entire run. Issue #294 sits in the series' modern stretch, still under McFarlane's control and featuring the dense, dark mythology the series built across its first 300 issues.
