1st issue of The Department of Truth and the first appearance of Cole Turner. InHyuk Lee 1:25 retailer incentive cover.
The Department of Truth #1 is the debut issue of James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds' conspiracy-thriller series from Image Comics, launched in September 2020. The premise plants Cole Turner inside a shadowy government organization built on a single, terrifying idea: that conspiracy theories, believed fervently enough, become real. The first issue drops the reader directly into that premise with no warm-up, pairing Tynion's tightly wound script with Simmonds' hand-textured, collage-inflected artwork to create something that reads unlike almost any other debut of the era.
This is Cover D, the 1:25 retailer incentive variant, with cover art by InHyuk Lee. Incentive variants at this ratio require a retailer to order 25 copies of the standard edition to qualify for a single copy of this cover, making them low-ordered relative to the print run. Lee's cover stands apart from Simmonds' interior aesthetic, bringing his signature painterly figure work to the issue's debut. The series went on to multiple printings through 2021, reflecting the strong initial response to the first issue, but the Cover D incentive variant is tied only to the first printing.
