Mike Mignola variant cover.
Berserker Unbound #1 is the launch issue of the 4-part Dark Horse miniseries by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Mike Deodato Jr., built around a sword-and-sorcery warrior dropped into the chaos of modern New York City. The premise pairs the brutality of classic barbarian fantasy with contemporary urban sprawl, and the Lemire-Deodato pairing brought considerable creative weight to the launch. This is the variant cover edition, with a cover by Mike Mignola, best known for Hellboy, rather than the standard cover.
Mignola's cover is a natural draw for collectors who follow his work across publishers. His style, all heavy shadow and stark geometry, translates well to a barbarian subject, and the pairing of a Mignola cover with Lemire's writing and Deodato's interior art made this variant one of the more visually distinctive editions of the debut issue. The series was solicited and sold as a miniseries, with the four issues later collected in the Berserker Unbound Volume 1 hardcover.
