Francesco Mattina virgin variant cover.
Spawn #291 is part of Todd McFarlane's long-running Image Comics series, now well past its 25th year of continuous publication by 2018. This is the C variant, a Francesco Mattina virgin cover edition, meaning the cover image runs without trade dress, logos, or cover copy, presenting Mattina's artwork in full. Mattina contributed a run of variant covers to the Spawn series during this period, and the virgin format was offered alongside standard dressed versions of his covers.
Francesco Mattina is known for his high-contrast, painterly approach to cover art, with a style that leans into dramatic lighting and a dark atmospheric palette that suits the Spawn character well. Virgin variants strip away the publisher branding to let the image stand on its own, and they are typically produced in lower numbers than the primary cover, making them a distinct collectible within the variant ecosystem. The interior of this issue is written by Todd McFarlane with art by Szymon Kudranski.
