Batman: The Dark Knight Vol. 1 #1 is the debut issue of superstar writer/artist David Finch's solo Batman series, launched prior to the New 52 reboot. Set in the wake of Batman Incorporated, the story follows Bruce Wayne as he juggles the expanding global demands of Batman Inc. while remaining unable to fully walk away from Gotham. When a childhood friend named Dawn Golden resurfaces as a victim, Batman is pulled into a web of conspiracy that leads him to a Venom-enhanced Killer Croc and straight into the sights of the Penguin. Finch brings his signature dark, gothic style to both the writing and art, with a noir tone and supernatural undertones courtesy of Etrigan the Demon lurking in the background.
