KEY ISSUE: 52 #11 is the first full appearance and first cover appearance of Kate Kane as Batwoman, one of the most significant character debuts of the modern era. Published during DC's ambitious year-long weekly series set during the "missing year" following Infinite Crisis, this is the issue the story was always building toward. With Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman absent from the DC Universe, Gotham gets a new protector as Batwoman steps in to rescue Renee Montoya and The Question from Whisper A'Daire's shapeshifters, and Renee realizes exactly who she is. The story is titled "Batwoman Begins!" on the cover, a deliberate nod to the 2005 film.
Note on key status: Kate Kane first appeared in civilian identity in 52 #7, and an accidental Batwoman cameo appeared in 52 #9 due to an art breakdown error (the figure was intended to be drawn in silhouette). Issue #11 is the planned first full costumed appearance and first cover appearance as Batwoman, making it the true collector key.
52 was one of the most ambitious projects in DC history: four writers (Johns, Morrison, Rucka, Waid) writing a weekly series in real time, with Keith Giffen providing breakdowns and J.G. Jones delivering a painted cover for every issue. This copy grades CGC 9.6 (04), a premium example of a genuine modern age key.
