Todd McFarlane black-and-white variant cover.

Spawn #299C is the black-and-white Todd McFarlane variant of one of the most anticipated issues in the long-running Image Comics series: the penultimate chapter before the landmark #300. Part two of the 'War to 300' arc, this issue marks the first team appearance of The Rapture, Heaven's answer to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and a new force introduced directly into the escalating pre-300 conflict. Interior art is by Jason Shawn Alexander, whose dark, painterly style defined the book's look through this era, while McFarlane himself contributes the Cover C variant rendered entirely in black and white.

The black-and-white edition strips the cover back to pure line work, giving McFarlane's composition an immediacy and rawness that the color version doesn't carry. The cover is widely noted as a homage to Amazing Spider-Man #299, a nod to Spawn's origins in McFarlane's Marvel work that collectors of both series have flagged. As the issue directly preceding #300, #299 sits at the hinge point of a story arc that had been building for years, and the Cover C variant offers a distinct presentation of that moment.

Characters: Spawn (Al Simmons), Jessica Priest, Cy-Gor, The Rapture

Original MSRP: $2.99

Series Title: Spawn

Volume: 1

Issue: 299

Cover: C

Cover Artist: Todd McFarlane

Writer: Todd McFarlane

Artist: Jason Shawn Alexander

Publisher: Image Comics

Publication Year: 2019

Printing: 1st Printing

Variant Type: Black & White Edition

Key Issue: 1st team appearance of The Rapture

*PHOTO DISCLAIMER: All photos are of the actual items, unless marked as pre-order.
